Serving With Gratitude

Nov 17, 2022

It was not that long ago when I was consistently leaving the office past 7 pm, only to see my young kids before they went to bed. Many of those nights I had to log back on the computer to finish my patient charts.

During that time, my most common emotions were frustrated, stressed and overwhelmed. I was stuck. I contemplated quitting my job many times because I was not able to practice medicine the way I wanted to. The burden of charting added on to each patient I saw felt like boulders landed on my shoulders.

What happened to the real person connection with patients? This thing that I enjoyed in medicine almost became something that I resisted, because it would add more time to my clinical day.

The pandemic pushed the reset button for many things, including my life. In the beginning of the pandemic, I was seeing about one third of my usual patient load. For the first time, I got a taste of going home on time after my clinical work was done. The extra few hours I was granted each day was beyond amazing. I got to develop my baking skills, spend time with my family, and simply just slow down. I imagined what it would be like if I could do this consistently, even with a full patient load.

Around that time, I was introduced to life coaching. The concepts made total sense. I was working with my physician coach on what was impossible – to go home on time. I thought I was efficient. I thought I was at maximum speed. I thought there was no other way.

It turns out that, with some curiosity, a lot of focus and determination, what seemed impossible became possible. In about three months’ time, I was able to cut down my charting time. Since then, I have been consistently going home 2-2.5 hours earlier than before, with all my patient charts completed.

Amazing how having 10 hours back of my life is rejuvenating. I now have more time to spend with my family. I joined The Life Coach School coaching certification program and became a life coach.

I started coaching physicians who are burnt out, stressed and overwhelmed. Coaching gives me joy. This new way of helping people is beyond amazing.

The three most common emotions I experience these days are: gratitude, light-hearted and content. I am grateful for the human experience. I am grateful for the opportunity to serve others the way I enjoy serving. I cherish every opportunity of the human connection.

My hope is that every physician will get to go home on time with their patient charts done. I am here to serve. I am ready to make it happen.
